COLOUR TREND: TERRACOTTA
17th January 2020
The weather is warming up for summer and things are heating up on our colour palettes too – embrace terracotta as your new season colour favourite.
Adding terracotta to a colour scheme is like a hug from your best friend – warm, sunny and makes everything else look good around it. Plants look better, pants look better, living and bedrooms all look better too when touched with a little terracotta.
With a history as old as the earth itself, terracotta is an ancient colour dug from the earth and brought to life on our walls, floors and flower pots, bringing an instant burst of balminess to a space. Here’s how to add this natural, welcoming hue to your interiors.
Dress your sofa with hand-woven wool or textured terracotta cushions, layered with blocks of colour you already have in your living room. Pair with bold brights to produce a sophisticated look – brilliant blue, strong teal and pale sage green all work beautifully. Or keep it calm with creams and off-white in upholstery and artworks with strong geometric lines. Add a dash of blush new, natural leather for an eclectic mix of modern and old-world sophistication.
Plants and pots
String up a leafy fern in a terracotta pot, softly nestled in a beaded macrame hanger to bring any room to life – bathroom, bedroom or outdoor room. Group a band of simple terracotta clay pots together on a rustic table or sleek sideboard filled with lush indoor plants for a fresh and timeless look.
In the kitchen, choose a feature wall of handmade terracotta tiles to make an impact with your splashback, or include a selection of artisan terracotta clay vessels for holding condiments, utensils or serveware and platters.
Transport your interiors to remote global lands by laying a rug with warm terracotta tones to soften hard floorboards or tiles, bring warmth to concrete and anchor your interior decoration.
A feature wall painted in washed-out terracotta tones against natural stone, marble or crisp white painted walls is a breath of fresh air for summer. Punctuate with fresh potted indoor plants to bring the outdoors in.
Terracotta teams beautifully with pink tones so makes a perfect transitional colour from soft pastel pinks. With a little help from cool greys and powder blues, you’ll have the perfect pastel palette for summer.
